Separate nominal geometry from acceptance requirements
Start with the function of the feature. Is the hole used for bolt clearance, alignment or a precision fit? A clearance hole may have different acceptance limits from a locating feature. Identify which dimensions are critical and whether additional machining is allowed.
Specify how the part will be inspected. A dimension at the upper surface does not fully describe a hole that changes size through the thickness. Where necessary, agree checks for taper, roundness or slot width at more than one location.
Review piercing and the cutting path
Small internal contours offer limited space for piercing and lead-in movements. Review these in the cutting software with the machine supplier. The pierce should not leave unacceptable damage on the functional edge.
Dense patterns also require attention to the cutting sequence. Discuss the arrangement of neighbouring features, part stability and the treatment of loose cutouts. Avoid assuming that the same strategy used for a large outline is suitable for every small feature.
Test the complete part
A coupon containing isolated holes is useful during development, but it does not reproduce every condition in a production drawing. Include the actual spacing between holes, nearby slots, corners and narrow sections when confirming the process.
For a useful sample review, record:
- Material grade, measured thickness and surface condition.
- The relevant drawing revision and dimensional tolerances.
- Machine configuration, gas and the approved cutting recipe.
- The measuring instrument and inspection locations.
- Whether the part is measured before or after finishing.
Keep both acceptable and rejected samples during development. They provide a more useful reference than a single photograph of the best result.
Allow for downstream finishing
Deburring removes unwanted raised material, while edge rounding changes the edge profile. For small features, these operations must be considered in the acceptance plan. Confirm that the required finishing does not make a critical hole, slot or narrow section unacceptable.
If a feature requires a fit that the tested cutting process cannot consistently achieve, consider a separate drilling, reaming or machining step. Include that step in the quotation and routing rather than discovering the need after the first batch.
Frequently asked questions
Can a fiber laser cut a hole smaller than the sheet thickness?
Some systems and applications can process demanding small features, but the required geometry and quality must be validated for the specific material and equipment.
Does machine positioning accuracy guarantee hole accuracy?
No. Positioning performance and the dimensions of a finished cut feature are different measures. Inspect the actual part against the drawing.
Review your drawing with KNOPPO
Send your material specification and drawings with critical holes and slots identified. KNOPPO can discuss the proposed cutting application and the finishing requirements that should be included in a sample evaluation.
